When deciding how to structure your roof, the pitch is a major factor. Roof pitch is one of the most commonly used terms in roofing, and it refers to the steepness of a roof. There are two types of roof pitches: high slope and low slope. Today we’re going to take a closer look at steep slope roofs, which are roofs that have a slope of 3:12 or greater. That means that for every 12 horizontal inches, the roof rises three or more vertical inches. Steep slope roofs often use asphalt shingles, concrete and clay tiles, wood shakes, slate, and metal roofs, as well as certain adhered single-ply membranes and spray polyurethane foam (SPF).
Let’s take a closer look at steep-slope roofs and how they can benefit your business!
1. Debris-Free
Due to the natural pull of gravity, debris and water do not linger on a steep-slope roof! This means debris will slide into your gutters where it belongs instead of accumulating on your roof. As a result, steep-slope roofs have relatively low maintenance because, unlike flat roofs, debris cannot cause leaks that often lead to costly roof repairs.
2. No Pooling Water/Snow
As mentioned in the previous point, steep-slope roofs benefit from the pull of gravity. That means that like debris, water and snow are unable to collect on the roof. This is especially beneficial for areas with heavy snowfall since snow and ice can cause moisture in roofs to collect. If you live in an area with heavy rain or snowfall, a steep-slope roof can help alleviate a lot of stress – for you and your roof!
3. Additional Storage
A steep slope roof is great not only for the benefit of gravity but also for all the additional storage space it provides! A steep roof pitch means storage space in your building’s attic. This space could be used for long-term storage, or possibly more depending on how high the roof’s pitch is (think game room or a staff lounge!)
4. More Energy-Efficient
If you’re interested in installing a cold roof system, a steeply pitched roof is a necessity. This type of roof is beneficial in a snowy environment because since hot air rises, it can cause the snow to melt and then refreeze, which can cause damage to the roof. Since hot air rises, this helps prevent water damage to the roof. A cold roof system helps keep the roof cold so snow can’t melt and refreeze. During the summer months, a cold roof system can help decrease cooling costs while also helping your building become more energy efficient!
5. Boost Your Curb Appeal
Unlike a flat or low-slope roof, a high-pitched roof can be a statement piece for your building! Steeply pitched roofs are eye-catching and can help increase the curb appeal of your building.
